Reflections On 10 Day Silent Meditation Retreat: Part 1

Still and serene in body and mind, having recently returned from a 10 day silent meditation retreat along the shores of a remote lake, secluded in the wilderness, situated in a tranquil forest grove. In mental quietude and physical solitude, the entirety of one’s being is imbued with such clarity and tranquility.

Alone by the lakeshore, watching its waves wash inward on the mind.

Meditating secluded in the forest, tangles of branches sweep upward all around, as if sprouting from the sky, blanketed by speckles of green above and below with the sun shining in from a thicket of humming locusts, cobwebs spinning in every direction. Truly an enlightening experience of deep and intensive meditation practice. Profoundly transformative, a total revolution of consciousness. Such an intense deepening of awareness.

The effect of settling the mind is unsurpassed.

Absorbed in meditation for hours and hours each day, deep in the forest free from all distractions, without obligations. Though meditating for 14 hours each day in one way or another, the experience felt absolutely timeless. Somehow time moves so swiftly, gliding by artfully like wind despite the practitioner slowing down to become immersed in meditative absorption.

When fully aware, there is sound in silence and silence in sound.

No words, just the sounds of cicadas during the day, crickets by night. The mind truly settles into equanimity. Through noble silence comes complete silence – not just the absence of speech, but silence of body, speech, and mind. It was quite remarkable to be immersed in such calm.

The still mind is free of suffering and imbued with serenity.
